Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for.-A packing- device for rudder-heads &c. consists of two cheeks f provided with semicircular openings containing blocks of wood, i.e. lignum vitµ, or other material q between which graphite, solidified oil, or other lubricating-material r is arranged. These cheeks are adjustably mounted upon and secured to a base-plate a made in two parts bolted together. Blocks s of lignum vitµ or the like, which allow wear to be taken up, are arranged between the adjoining edges of the cheeks f, which contain elongated boltholes j, provided with drainage grooves k. The adjustment is effected by screws g engaging threaded holes in flanges h on the base-plate.
