Abstract

926,824. Stuffing-box substitutes. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 9, 1962 [Feb. 21, 1961], No. 6352/61. Class 122 (5). In a labyrinth packing for preventing leakage along a rotary shaft, e.g. a steam turbine shaft 1, from a high pressure to a low pressure region and comprising axially spaced gland rings 2 of I cross-section each located by having its radially outer flange 2a housed in a corresponding channel 3a in the gland housing 3, the bending stresses in the rings 2 are reduced by providing inner circumferential flanges 7 on the housing 3 to abut the low pressure sides 2d of the rings. The rings each consist of four segments biased toward the shaft by leaf springs 4 and prevented from rotating by dowels 5 engaging notches 6 between adjacent segments. Alternate projections 2b and channels 2c on the rings co-operate with ribs 1a and 1b respectively on the shaft.
