Abstract

1275901 Seals ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd 18 June 1969 [18 June 1968] 28964/68 Heading F2B [Also in Division Fl] A seal, e.g. for use in a gas turbine engine comprises an annular array of elastically deflectable strip members 30 attached to a rotor or stator member, the fingers 30 having free ends in close proximity to the other said member. The fingers 30 may be mounted around a fixed ring 28 to co-operate sealingly with an annular axial extension 26 of a turbine disc (22), Fig. 2 (not shown). Leakage through the gaps 32 between the fingers 30 is prevented by a second series of fingers 34, offset from the first, and the free ends of the fingers 30, 34 may be coated with wear resistant material, e.g. tungsten carbide. Alternatively, Fig. 5 (not shown), the fingers 30, 34 may project axially of the stator to seal against an axially opposing rotor member. The fingers 30, 34, the rotary part 26, or both may include means defining annular peripheral flanges (not shown) to act as a labyrinth seal.
