724,316. Stuffing-box substitutes. PARSONS & MARINE ENGINEERING TURBINE RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION. Sept. 10, 1953 [March 25, 1953], No. 8205/53. Class 122 (5). A labyrinth gland for a turbine rotor shaft a comprises a ring of segments d each urged radially inwards against a fixed stop j by a spring k and having a tilting edge o displaced axially downstream from the labyrinth fins e, f, so that should the shaft contact the fins the gland will tilt about the edge o to allow the fins to be radially displaced. The segments d have a head portion m loosely housed in a groove h in the gland housing.
