Abstract

1500550 Shaft seals CARRIER CORP 30 June 1975 [5 Sept 1974] 27538/75 Heading F2B In a rotary machine, e.g. a centrifugal compressor, spaced segmental bushing seals 53 enclose a space 54 which is vented, through ducts 58, 60, 56, to atmosphere. The seal segments, which may be of carbon, are spring loaded axially and radially. A seal housing (55) is horizontally split into two parts 55a, 55b. The parts are screwed together and the housing is located by pin 70 and segments 75 and is sealed by 0-ring 77. A drive section 13 has a removable cover 20, which is separable along a horizontal parting line. Drive shaft 25 is journalled in bearing 26 and carries first stage impeller 31. A further compressor section (16, Fig. 1, not shown) may house second and third stage impellers.
