Labyrinth Seal The present invention relates to labyrinth seals of the type having a number of segments which are put together so that they form a complete ring surrounding the shaft to be sealed, each segment being radially guided by a spring against a fixed stop is pressed inside.
If a radial relative movement between the rotor and the stuffing box housing occurs to an extent which is sufficient to bring the shaft into contact with one of the sealing segments, the latter can be moved outward with this arrangement, with the spring being deformed, and if then the Wave again assumes its normal position relative to the stuffing box housing, the spring pushes the segment back into its normal working position.
During operation, there is a pressure difference between the two sides of the sealing segment which presses it axially against the side wall of the channel in the stuffing box housing in which it is mounted. Therefore, when the shaft pushes the segment outwards, it has to overcome considerable friction and the spring must be strong enough to then push the segment back into its working position against the effect of the frictional forces. So the spring has to be relatively strong, and therefore the force exerted by the shaft on the segment to overcome both the frictional and the spring force creates large frictional forces at the points of contact between the shaft and the segment.
The purpose of the present invention is to alleviate this disadvantage.
According to the present invention, each segment is held in such a way that it can tilt around a tilting edge on the low-pressure side of the segment, with the sealing constrictions, viewed from this edge, lying against the side of the higher pressure, so in the event of contact between shaft and Segment those parts of the Seg mentes which form the constriction to limit the flow between the segment and the shaft, can be shifted in the radial direction without frictional forces zti are overcome.
The segments themselves can have ribs for cooperation with annular upper surfaces on the shaft, or there can be provided ribs on the shaft which cooperate with annular surfaces on the segments; finally, in some cases some ribs can be arranged on the segments and some ribs on the shaft.
In the accompanying drawing, an example embodiment of a device according to the present invention is shown schematically, namely: Fig. 1 is an elevation of a segment of the seal, Fig. 2 is a view of the same in the direction of the arrow% 1 in Fig.1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same, Fig. 4 is a section through the labyrinth seal, the segment in the normal position, Fig. 5 is a section like Fig. 4, but the segment is shown in a position displaced by contact with the shaft,
and FIG. 6 shows a section like FIG. 4, the seal containing three rings of segments. In the illustrated seal, the turbine rotor shaft a is provided with a plurality of pairs of axially spaced apart, stepped surfaces b, c over which there is a ring of segments d, each segment being provided with two ribs e, j 'which are provided with the segment consist of one piece. Each segment has a substantially rectangular cross-section, but contains an enlarged head part and a rib-bearing tail part g.
The head part is loosely housed in an annular groove aa of the stuffing box housing and is supported by at least one weak helical compression spring k, the ends of which are against the head part of segment d and against the housing i. push, pressed radially inwards against fixed stop surfaces j. A pin provided with a conical head p is attached to segment d and lies in spring k.
The low-pressure sides m ,, n of the segment are flat, and the ribs protrude from these surfaces in the direction against the high pressure, so that if the shaft surfaces b, c should come into contact with the ribs e, fine segment (Fig. 5), the latter tilts around its upper lower pressure edge o without overcoming any frictional resistance, the springs k yielding to enable this tilting movement.
The springs can be relatively weak as they only have a force slightly greater than the weight. of the segment must exercise so that the Seg elements below the shaft are returned to their working position when the shaft resumes its normal position.
When tilting, only the rib e (closest to the tilting edge) is in contact with the shaft, while the other rib f is lifted from it, and so the wear on the rib e due to the friction between shaft and ribs remains limited while damage to the other rib is unlikely.
If desired, you can, instead. that all ribs are arranged on the segment, at least some of these ribs are arranged on the shaft.
The above-mentioned coil springs can nen z. B. replaced by leaf springs, be; However, it is desirable that the springs work without noticeably frictional resistance to the movements of the segments.
