Abstract
933,618. Labyrinth packing; elastic fluid turbines. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. April 16, 1962 [May 27, 1961], No. 19214/61. Classes 110 (3) and 122 (5). Sealing means between relatively rotatable members, e.g. a row of gas-turbine blades 13 and the turbine casing 15, comprises a split ring 18 that resiliently end slidably engages one member 15 in sealing relationship and has one or more axial projections 21, 22 co-operating with one or more radial projections 17 on the other member 13. The projections 21, 22 are spaced from the flange 17 by small gaps 25, 26 and the ring 18 has spaced lands 27, 28 held in engagement with the casing 15 by the resilience of the ring, the chamber 29 between the lands being vented to the low pressure side by slots 30 (Fig. 3). If relative axial movement occurs between the turbine disc 12 and the casing 15 due to thermal expansion or contraction, the ring 18 is moved by contact with one of the projections 21 or 22 into a new position of equilibrium.
