Abstract

820,708. Stuffing-box substitutes. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. May 9, 1958 [May 14, 1957], No. 15031/58. Class 122 (5). A labyrinth seal between rotor and stator parts of an axial-flow compressor comprises rotary and non-rotary rings 31, 34, the latter ring being mounted so that it can move transversely of the rotational axis against resilient frictional resistance effected by springs 46 which are carried on circumferentially-spaced pins 42 passing through clearance holes 43. The pins 42 are secured to a stator part 39 and pass through the clearance holes 43 provided in a flange 37 formed on a ring 36 to which the sealing ring 34 is brazed or welded. The springs 46 are held between collars 47 retained on the pins 42 by pins or keys 48. The thickness of the ring 36 and the distance between the ring 34 and flange 37 are such that, in operation, heat generated by the contact of the ring 34 with ribs 33 formed on the rotary ring 31 is slow to dissipate thereby causing the ring 34 to expand and provide a small working clearance between the two rings.
