839,325. Turbine stator casings. ANSTALT FUR STROMUNGSMASCHINEN G.m.b.H. Aug. 14, 1956 [Aug. 18, 1955], No. 24803/56. Class 110 (3). In a stator casing for a gas turbine, abradable sealing segments of high heat-resisting quality are mounted in either circumferentially closely spaced axially-extending grooves, or in a circumferentially-extending annular groove, formed on the inner surface of the stator casing, the sealing segments being disposed opposite the tips of a row of rotor blades. In Figs. 1 and 2, the stator casing 1 is formed on its inner surface with axially extending undercut recesses 3 in which engage sealing segments 4, the ends of the segments being shaped to correspond with the sides of the recesses 3. The segments are locked against axial movement by means of side plates 6 secured to the casing. The segments surround the tips of rotor blades 2 and are formed of abradable material such as graphite, sintered metal, bronze, copper, plastic with iron filings embedded therein, plastic or ceramic material so that in the event of the blade tips touching the segments in operation, the segments will be worn away by the blade tips so as to restore the clearance. In Fig. 4, the segments are provided with mounting portions 7 which are adapted to engage a circumferential groove formed in the stator casing. The face of the segment is curved convexly in the direction of flow of the working fluid and the surface is also formed with serrations extending transversely to the direction of flow of the turbine working fluid.
