Abstract
935,128. Stuffing-box substitutes. FLEXIBOX Ltd. May 31, 1962 [July 24, 1961], No. 26678/61. Class 122 (5). In a mechanical seal the seal rings a, f are urged axially into contact with each other by helical coil springs j located in an annular recess h in a member g secured to one, f, of the rings, the springs being circumferentially located and frictionally held in the recess by a corrugated spring strip i surrounding the inner periphery of the recess. The springs are compressed between the member g and its fixed housing n. The member g is slidably sealed in the housing n by an 0-ring and held against rotation by a tongue m in the housing engaging a slot in the member which is held captive in the housing during normal operation by a split ring o. The ring a is driven from the rotary shaft b by one or more pins e engaging slots in the ring and extending from a part f secured to the shaft. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the member having the annular recess for the springs and strip is secured to the rotatable seal ring.
