Abstract

646,420. Stuffing - box substitutes. BRITISH THERMOSTAT CO., Ltd. Oct. 21, 1948, No. 27408. [Class 122(v)] In a sealing device for a rotary shaft wherein an annular seal ring carried by the shaft is urged by resilient means into rubbing contact with a fixed annular ring, the rotatable seal ring and a gland packing are disposed within a housing between which and the shaft is a coiled transmission spring arranged to provide a positive drive from the shaft to the housing and seal ring while the shaft is rotating in a predetermined direction. A seal ring 3 freely mounted on a shaft 2 houses a gland packing element 5 and is urged into rotating sealing contact with a fixed ring 1 by a spring 7 one end of which abuts the seal ring 3 and the other bears against the end 8 of a housing 6 driven from the shaft by a torque spring 12 fitting closely on the shaft and having one end 13 bent radially to engage a slot in the housing 6 so that when the shaft rotates in a predetermined direction the spring 12 grips it and drives the housing which drives the seal ring by means of indentations in the housing engaging corresponding keyways in the periphery of the seal ring. Outward axial movement of the seal ring is limited by inwardly directed lugs 11 on the edge of the housing engaging a shoulder 3a on the ring. In an alternative arrangement the drive between the housing and the seal ring is transmitted by a plate having tongues on its periphery that engage recesses in the seal ring and slots in the housing.
