651,897. Stuffing-box substitutes. CRANE PACKING, Ltd. Feb. 26, 1948, No. 5789. Convention date, Oct. 17, 1946. [Class 122(v)] A sealing device for relatively rotating parts 10, 18 comprises a diaphragm 26 of flexible resilient deformable material having a flange 27 at its inner periphery urged axially into contact with a sealing washer 22 and an axially extending flange 28 at its outer periphery housing a rigid band 30 that exerts a radially outward compressive force against the axial flange 28 when the seal is installed, the band having a portion telescoped over the washer and means for preventing relative rotation between the band and the washer, and radially inwardly projecting abutment means are provided for limiting the axial movement of the washer 22 out of the band 30. Lugs 35 on the band 30 engage slots 36 in the radial flange 23 of the washer 22 and a ferrule 31 carried by the inner flange of the diaphragm 26 is urged axially by a coiled spring 34 thereby urging the sealing face 24 of the washer 22 into rubbing contact with a radial face 25 of a ball bearing 12. The seal is assembled in a retainer 20 one radial flange 37 of which limits the axial movement of the washer 22 out of the band 30. The retainer 20 may be omitted and the said axial movement of the washer limited by an inward flange at the outer end of the band. The coiled spring 34 may be replaced by a leaf type spring or the ferrule 31 may have a finger type spring integral therewith.
