Packing, metallic; packing, non - metallic; connected to source of high or low pressure; draining. -In packing of the type in which a number of packing-elements 10 slide in recesses 8 formed in supporting-rings 2, 3, and 4, contained in a stuffing- box casing 1 and surrounding a shaft 5, the force with which each segment is pressed on to the shaft is the comparatively small resultant pressure of a radially-acting spring 11 and the radial pressure of the fluid medium which is permitted into the recess, combined with the friction produced between one face of the segment and its housing due to the axially-acting spring 12 and the pressure of the medium on the opposite face. The fluid medium is either leakage from the pressure fluid, which leakage is led off by the ring 6 and conduit 7, or steam supplied through the same means when packing against vacuum. Any number of packing-rings 2, 3, 4 may be used, and in some cases the axially acting spring may be dispensed with.
