496,012. Stuffing-box packing. ANGUS & CO., Ltd., G. Jan. 14, 1938, No. 1282. Convention date, Jan. 18, 1937. [Class 122 (v)] In packing for a rotating shaft, of the type in which a flexible ring 1, Fig. 1, is pressed on to the shaft by a garter spring 5, and is protected from the pressure fluid by a shielding ring 7, the space 9 behind the packing is vented, e.g. by means of holes 10. As shown in Fig. 1 rotation of the ring 1 is prevented by means of pins 3 or by projections 4 on the ring. A sleeve 2, which is pressed against the ring 1 by a spring ring 6, is packed by the shielding ring 7. A packing unit, Fig. 2, comprises a packing-ring 12 enclosed in a casing 11, in which it is secured by a flange 14, connected to the ring by a web 15. The shielding ring 17 is pressed against the radial face of the ring 12 by a spring ring 19, and is supported by a metal ring 18. The space 20 behind the packing is vented by holes 21 in the web 15 and in the casing 11. In a simplified form a packing-ring is held in a metal casing by a shielding ring which closes one end of the casing.
