Abstract

682,486. Shaft seals. BRITISH THOMSON HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Nov. 14, 1950 [Nov. 14. 1949]. No. 27819/50. Class 122(v) A rotatable shaft seal comprises a single ring 19, Fig. 3, to which sealing liquid under pressure is supplied e.g., through a duct 26, a chamber 25, a passage 24, a chamber 18 and ring holes 28 to the shaft 13, the ring 19 having one portion 31 designed for relatively large sealing liquid flow between ring and shaft for cooling and having an axially disposed portion 30 allowing relatively small liquid flow to limit the escape of said liquid. The shaft 13 extends through the end wall of a hydrogen filled generator casing, and the ring 19 which is of metal is in arcuate halves held together by garter springs 20 which bear against a chamfered edge 22 and so force the inner side of the ring against the wall of the chamber 18. In operation sealing oil from the chamber 18 flows through the holes 28 to a groove 29, Fig. 4 and thence along inclined grooves 33 in the portion 31 to atmosphere. Oil flow in the opposite direction is limited by pump-back grooves 32 off-set from the groove 29. Axial loading on the ring 19 is relieved by radial vent grooves 35, 36 leading to circumferential grooves 37, 38 in the hydrogen side 23, and a plurality of radial grooves 39 leading to a circumferential groove 40 on the atmosphere side of the ring.
