Abstract

[Also in Division F2] Means for sealing and braking the shaft 6 of a fluid pressure rotary machine, for example a blower, compressor or turbine, comprises a piston 1 which is slidable on a cylindrical extension 5 of the machine casing 3, connected to the casing by a metal bellows 2 and spaced from the machine rotor 11 when the machine is running, the piston being actuated to bring it into contract with the rotor 11 when the machine is brought to rest by supplying auxiliary fluid at a higher pressure than that in the machine to the space 8 inside the bellows 2, the consequent pressure of the piston on the rotor causing axial displacement of theshaft resulting in closure of an annular clearance 7 between the shaft and the extension 5 and the supply of auxiliary fluid to said clearance. Movement of the piston toward the rotor uncovers an orifice 10 in the extension 5 through which auxiliary fluid is supplied to the clearance 7 and consequent displacement of the shaft closes the clearance 7 by engagement of a flange 12 on the shaft with the casing 3. When the machine is running the shaft is sealed by normal sealing means (not shown). The invention is applicable to machines linked to a common fluid circuit and when in use on one of such machines it holds the shaft at rest and the auxiliary fluid in the clearance 7 prevents leakage of common fluid along the shaft.
