Abstract
625,377. Bearings. TRIGGS, W. W. (Akt.- Ges. Brown, Boveri, & Cie). July 25, 1947, No. 20025. [Class 12 (i)] [Also in Group XXVI] The rotor a of a divided flow low-pressure gas turbine is held in the casing b by means of two thrust bearings c, d, which are displaceable axially so that the planes of symmetry of both halves of the rotor and stator approximately co-incide under all conditions of operation. The bearings c, d, Fig. 7,. which may be mounted on the casing b, are loaded by springs g which press towards the centre 1-2 of the machine so that as the rotor expands the stress in the springs is increased. The supporting element of the thrust bearing is formed as a piston so that when the spring casing is filled with oil it provides means for damping out any axial oscillations of the rotor. Oil pressure may be used instead of the springs g. In this case, the supply of oil to the casing must be controlled by the edges of the damping piston so that the oil pressure increases as the rotor moves away from the symmetrical position. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 9, the thrust bearings are connected by means of rodding i, k, l, m and n which allows extensions of the rotor but prevents its displacement. By means of unsymmetrical rodding, it is possible to distribute the expansion of the rotor in any desired ratio over the two bearings. If desired, the levers i, n may be pivoted -on the casing b.
