In a turbine, for example a gas turbine, having rotor blades made of heat-resistant material of comparatively poor tensile strength such as a ceramic material, the rotor blades being mounted on and projecting radially inwardly from an annular rotor wheel, the turbine working fluid flowing in contact with the inner surface of the rotor wheel, the stator casing of the turbine is formed with an annular space which surrounds the rotor wheel and fluid under pressure is supplied to the space so as to nullify wholly or partly the effect of centrifugal force acting on the rotor blades and rotor. In the embodiment shown, the stator blades 2 and the rotor blades 4 are of ceramic material, the stator blades 2 being mounted in a tubular member 1 and the rotor blades 4 being mounted at their radially outer ends in a rotor 3. An annular space 7 is formed in the stator casing 5 and fluid under pressure is supplied thereto. A suitable sealing device is provided at 6.
