Abstract

972,907. Liquid seals. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. May 21, 1963, No. 20246/63. Heading F2B. A centrifugal liquid seal for a rotatable shaft 16 journalled within a bearing 17 comprises an annular member 30, 33 secured to the shaft and a static annular member 40 mounted about the shaft and extending as at 41 into an annular radially-inwardly facing trough 35 formed by the member 30, 33 so as to shield one side of the bearing from any hot gas, means being provided, operative throughout the rotation of the shaft, for supplying lubricating oil to the bearing and for causing the oil after its passage through the bearing to flow continuously through the trough to form a seal between the members 30, 33 and 40. The shaft 16 is that of an aircraft gas turbine engine. The member 40 is secured to an annular member 36 bolted to a hub portion 27 of an interior housing 23 secured to the engine casing by members 25, 26. The lubricating oil, after passing out of the bearing 17 as shown by arrow 52, enters through passages 53 into the trough 35 where under the influence of centrifugal force due to the rotation of the shaft it forms an annular well into which the fin 41 of the member 40 dips. The oil flowing from the trough 35 passes through the annular space 55 and is returned to a sump via holes provided in the hub portion 27 and the bearing outer race. The air being sealed is formed of low pressure air heated in its passage through the engine and entering the housing through apertures 23a and combining as at 50 air which has become heated after cooling the turbine and has passed through a seal 44, 45.
