Abstract

Casings; leaking-preventing devices.-In axial fow turbines of the disc type wherein the nozzle diaphragms 4 are carried by a cylindrical stator 3 exposed on both sides to the motive fluid, the stator 3 is connected at the high-pressure end with a part of the turbine which is located nearer the rotor shaft than is the stator 3 itself, and which is unaffected by irregular expansion of the casing 1, as for example the gland or bearing housing 5, means being provided for transmitting end thrust from the stator to the casing. The first diaphragm 4, Fig. 1, and a spider 6 have hub portions 11 which fit within the housings 5, a spigot 12 engaging a groove 13 of the housing at the high-pressure end. Pins 14 through the spigot 12 and housing 5 prevent rotation of the stator 3. The first diaphragm 4 and the spider 6 abut against the inner ends of the housings 5 and transmit end-thrust to the casing 1. They are flexible axially so as to permit slight differences of expansion. Where a clearance is provided between the spider 6 and the inner end of the housing 5, Fig. 3, a flange 15 is arranged to engage a groove 16 in the casing 1 to transmit end thrust. Fig. 3 also shows, in place of the first diaphragm 4, a .nozzle plate 18 connected to a spider 20 carrying the hub 11. Another modification shows the spider at the high-pressure end formed integral with the stator 3. A piston ring 8 located in a groove 7 in the stator 3 is forced against a face 9 on the casing 1 by steam admitted to the groove by ducts 10.
