Abstract

896,080. Stuffing-box substitutes. VOITH G.m.b.H., J. M. Dec. 21, 1960 [Dec. 28, 1959], No. 43927/60. Class 122 (5). A hydrodynamic seal between a rotary shaft 1 and a stationary housing 2 comprises an annular intermediate driven member 3 forming with the housing and the shaft gaps 10, 11 and having respectively on each of its inner and outer surfaces two sections 6, 7 and 8, 9 of helical feed grooves of opposite hand. The drive for the member 3 may be independent from the shaft drive and may be operated by fluid pressure, such as an oil-operated Pelton turbine, or by electricity. Sealing medium 12, e.g. oil, is introduced prior to operation in the gaps 10, 11 through ducts 20, 21. When the member 3 is rotated, the medium is forced by the helical grooves towards the centre of the gaps from both ends thereof and the resultant built up pressure provides a seal against the flow of the pressure-fluid to be sealed off contained in the space 4, the member 3 being supported radially and axially in a floating manner. Cooling fluid is circulated through grooves 22, 23 in the shaft and/or the casing for keeping the viscosity of the sealing medium constant. When the shaft and the member 3 are stationary, the latter, under the influence of the pressure fluid acting on its inner end face 14, bears with its annular surface 15 against a shoulder 16 on the casing 2 and with its outer end surface 17 against a flange 18, 18<SP>1</SP> on the shaft 1 directly or through a resilient diaphram seal 19.
