838,128. Stuffing-box substitutes. GIRDLESTONE PUMPS Ltd. Aug. 20, 1958 [Aug. 8, 1957], No. 25073/57. Class 122 (5). The drive-shaft 2 of a rotary pump is sealed by a centrifugal liquid seal of leakage liquid created by impeller blades 13b on each side of a rotor 13 secured to the shaft within a chamber 9. To form a reservoir of leakage liquid in the chamber 9 when the pump is at rest, an annular wall 4b on the pump casing 4 closely surrounds the shaft and extends into a counterbore in the rotor 13, the latter being sealed to the shaft by a packing-ring 14.
