881,400. Stuffing-box substitutes. BUNGARTZ, P. Dec. 13, 1958, No. 40254/58. Class 122 (5). A liquid seal for a centrifugal pump comprises an auxiliary rotor m driven with the pump rotor and housed in an auxiliary chamber which communicates with the clearance d between the shaft of the pump rotor and its chamber casing b, the suction channel of the auxiliary rotor communicating with the clearance between the auxiliary rotor shaft and its chamber casing c, and conduit means k being provided for supplying sealing liquid into the latter suction channel. The auxiliary rotor m is carried by a shaft member formed integrally with the pump rotor, the clearance d being provided between the shaft member and a common wall a separating the pump and auxiliary rotor chambers. To prevent the liquid being pumped from escaping outwardly along the shaft member, the sealing liquid, which has been supplied into the auxiliary rotor chamber through the closable port k is pumped by the rotor m into the clearance d, the pressure of the pumped and sealing liquids in the clearance being substantially balanced; a buffer chamber f is provided between the pump rotor and the wall a and communicates with the suction channel of the latter rotor by axial or radial ports h, g so as to balance the supply pressure to the pump rotor. A cooling chamber i is formed in the auxiliary chamber casing c and a stuffing-box packing is provided for sealing the shaft at low operating pressures.
