Abstract
462,208. Centrifugal pumps. TRIGGS, W. W. (Nash Engineering Co.) Feb. 3, 1936, No. 3243. [Class 110 (i)] The rotor of a liquid ring pump is sealed axially and peripherally by high-pressure liquid. The liquid is introduced at 44 into a chamber 43. A part of it seals the surfaces 38, 39 at the small end of the cone and the shaft and stuffing- box 17, 18, a part passes through ports 45 and mixes with the air being pumped and the rest passes through a control valve 48 to a chamber 46. After leaving the chamber 46 via port 49, some of the liquid passes through a port 52 to seal the surfaces 34, 36 and some passes through ports 50, 54 to seal the peripheral surface 34a. The mixture of air and liquid from the discharge passes to a separator. With large pressures labyrinth form of sealing is used at the periphery of the rotor. In a modification, the sealing liquid is delivered directly into the inlet passage 26 where it combines with the air being compressed and passes to the rotor. The liquid circulates through the passages in the reverse direction to that described and in so doing seals the running clearances. In another modification, the liquid used to seal the small end of the cone is introduced at 44 and the rest of the sealing liquid, taken from the bottom of the separator, is introduced at 61a. In a further modification, all the sealing liquid is introduced at 61a and the liquid used to make up losses in the ring and for cooling is introduced at 57.
