Abstract
724,892. Axial flow compressors; stuffing- box substitutes. ALLIS-CHALMERS MANUFACTURING CO. Nov. 5, 1953, No. 30655/53. Classes 110 (1) and 122 (5). In an axial flow compressor comprising a rotor 17 mounted in bearings 26, 35, respectively housed in the inlet and discharge end portions 7, 8 of the compressor casing, leakage into the compressor casing of ambient air and oil vapour from the rotor bearings is prevented by means including a pair of coaxially spaced labyrinth seals 21, 22 at the inlet end of the rotor between the bearing 26 and the bladed portion 17a and a labyrinth seal 32 at the discharge end of the rotor between the bearing 35 and the portion 17a, the chamber 27 between the seals 21, 22 being connected with the discharge end portion 8 and the chamber 28 between the inlet bearing 26 and the outer seal 22 being connected to a source of suction. Discharge air or other gas is supplied to the chamber 27 through conduits 40 in the turbine rotor. A mechanical seal 30 is provided where the rotor shaft extends through the inlet end cover 15 of the compressor casing and any ambient air leaking therethrough passes via ports 31 into chamber 28. A pump 43 supplies oil from a pneumatically-sealed tank 41 through conduits 42a, 42b respectively to the bearings 26 and 35, and chamber 28 and the chamber 36 between the seal 32 and the bearing 35 are connected respectively through conduits 44a, 44, and ports 39, chamber 37 and conduits 44b, 44 to the space 41a above the oil in the tank 41 which is evacuated by a pump 45.
