Abstract

687,120. Stuffing-box substitutes. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Oct. 31, 1951 [Nov. 20, 1950], No. 28344/50. Class 122(v) The entrance of a movable member into part of a system in which high vacuum is created by two vacuum pumps operating in series is sealed by two axially spaced sealing members, the space between the sealing members being connected to the rough vacuum existing between the two pumps and the outer sealing member being a liquid seal of oil having a low vapour pressure. A rotatable shaft 1 extends into a high vacuum vessel 2 and passes through a housing comprising two annular chambers 4, 5 the outer 4 of which contains oil and the inner 5 of which is connected with the rough vacuum of the system through a pipe 6. The oil in the chamber 4 is open to atmosphere through a sight glass 9 and leakage of oil from the chamber to the atmosphere and to the rough vacuum chamber 5 is prevented by sealing rings 7 and 8 respectively. A sealing ring 10 seals the rough vacuum chamber 5 from the vacuum vessel 2 and any oil leaking into the rough vacuum chamber is flung outwardly by a baffle 11 and drained into a catchpot 13. When the shaft 1 is horizontal an additional sealing ring is provided between the atmosphere and the ring 7 and oil leakage into the rough vacuum chamber and into the space between the ring 7 and the additional ring may be pumped out and returned to the oil seal.
