Abstract
607,091. Stuffing-box substitutes. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Jan. 25, 1946, No. 2517. Convention date, Jan. 25, 1945. [Class 122 (v)] Means for sealing a rotatable shaft 2 of a machine containing gas under pressure comprises two rings 11 that have circumferential grooves 14, 15 and the adjacent faces are recessed to form a groove 13 that communicates with the grooves 14, 15 by means of ports. The housing 12 is supplied with liquid under pressure to fill the space between the shaft and the rings 11. Any liquid escaping along the shaft is partially collected by the flanged rings 18, 21. A plunger ring 22 is provided on the shaft adjacent a labyrinth packing 28 from which liquid is allowed to drain through holes 29 to a chamber 32 connected to a vertical pipe 34 adjacent the slinger ring 22. The chamber and pipe lead from a trap which prevents passage of gas and is retained filled with liquid by a part of the liquid thrown by the slinger ring 22. Attached to the labyrinth packing housing is a chamber 39 connected to the space around the shaft 2 by a restricted opening 40 to equalize differences in gas pressure that arise due to the rotation of the shaft.
