[Classes 110 (i) and 122 (v)] In a seal for pressure pumps comprising a pump shaft 18 and a rotor 5 connected thereto, the rotor is provided with a thrust collar 11 engaged by a sealing ring 22 surrounding the pump shaft, the sealing ring being subjected to pressure by means of a pressure member 24 having a piston portion slidably mounted in a pressure chamber 37 adapted to be filled with lubricating fluid under pressure, said member being arranged automatically, in response to fluid pressure acting on said piston portion, to move toward said sealing ring for compressing the same. The web 9 of the rotor has blades 14, flanges 15 and vanes 16. Fluid drawn from the inlet 13 which escapes to the rear of the rotor behind flanges 15 is forced by vanes 16 through openings 17 back into the useful pressure liquid stream. Leakage along the shaft 18 is prevented by the sealing ring 22 which is held against the collar 11 by a ring 23 loaded by the piston type sleeve 24. The chamber 37 communicates with a compartment 44 which is filled with lubricant through a fitting 43. The lubricant, and therefore the member 24, are put under pressure by a piston 46 which carries a weight 50. Leakage through the casing 4 is prevented by packing 28 secured by a gland member 29 held by a clamping ring 39, the packing being lubricated through an opening 26 in the member 24.
