Abstract
1387255 Hot gas engines UNITED STIRLING (SWEDEN) AB & CO KB 5 Sept 1973 41646/73 Heading F1S [Also in Division F2] A crank-shaft 2 is sealed where it extends through a wall 1 of a crank-case containing gas at a cyclically varying pressure, e.g. as in a hot gas engine, by means comprising an oil-containing chamber 7 surrounding the crank-shaft external to the crank-case, a conduit 9 connecting the chamber 7 with an oil sump 8 in the crank-case and including a non-return valve 10 allowing oil to flow from the sump to the chamber, and means for rotating the oil in the chamber. The crank-shaft is sealed where it extends through an end-wall 11 in the chamber housing by an endface seal comprising a rotary sleeve 13 which is driven from the crank-shaft by screws 19, slidably mounted on a sleeve 14 connected to the shaft, and urged by a spring 18 into engagement with a non-rotary ring 12. The screws 19 engage slots 20 in the sleeve 13. A perforated rubber ring 21 is mounted on the crank-shaft for rotation therewith and a lip seal 4 is disposed between the wall 1 and the crank-shaft. In operation, during periods of maximum gas pressure oil flows through the valve 10 to the chamber 7 and when the pressure in the chamber exceeds that in the crank-case oil leaks past the lip seal 4 into the crank-case. The oil is rotated in the chamber 7 by means of the slots 20 and the ring 21 whereby any gas that may have leaked into the chamber when the engine is at rest will be urged, by the centrifugal force acting on the oil, towards the shaft and will flow past the seal 4 into the crank-case when the pressure therein is less than that in the chamber 7.
