Abstract

497,287. Centrifugal pumps; stuffing- box substitutes. ALLEN SHERMAN HOFF CO. June 16, 1937, No. 16782. Convention date, June 26, 1936. [Classes 110 (i) and 122 (v)] In centrifugal pumps for abrasive mixtures with the pump clearances flushed by clear water, sealing between the impeller and housing is effected by a resilient ring projecting radially from one member and engaging on the other member a cylindrical surface coaxial with the impeller axis, the ring being deflected by the excess pressure of the flushing-fluid. The impeller B comprises a metal skeleton frame moulded into a rubber sheath 11, the frame having shrouds 10, 10<11> connected by bladesupporting parts 10<1>. The perforations in the frame may consist of arcuate slots arranged radially or holes arranged in rows. The inlet 3 has a rubber lining 4 while the impeller chamber has linings 7, 9, C. Flushing-water is supplied by pipes 25, 26 to the inlet and shaft sides of the impeller. In the latter case, the lining 9 has a ring or lip 27 engaging the impeller and shaped to pass flushing-water and prevent back flow of abrasive material. In the former case, the lining C may carry a similar rib engaging a metal ring bolted to the impeller, or a metal sealing-ring D is pressed against a boss on the impeller. The ring has slight axial but no rotary movement. A test pipe 23<11> may draw off samples of flushing- liquid to check for abrasive material.
