672,823. Centrifugal pumps; stuffing-box substitutes. WILFLEY & SONS, Inc., A. R. Feb. 2, 1950 [July 19, 1949], No. 2762/50. Classes 110(i) and 122(v) In a sealing device for a centrifugal pump in which a resilient sealing valve member is pressed against the impeller housing to seal the impeller shaft when the pump is stationary and is withdrawn when the pump is running, the sealing valve member 40 comprises a hub portion 62a which closely fits the impeller shaft 31 and extends with radial clearance 64a in the shaft opening O in the housing and is joined by a flexible conical diaphragm 62b to a rim portion 62c attached to an annular assembly V rotatable with the shaft and axially movable relative thereto. When the shaft 31 is at rest a spring 56 forces the assembly V toward the housing and the rim 62c of the valve member contacts an annular ridge 63 on the housing; rotation of the shaft actuates centrifugal weights 54 that are pivoted on a member 53 fixed to a sleeve 45 secured to the shaft 31 'and operates on the assembly V to force it away from the housing against the spring 56 to unseat the rim 62c and open the gap 64a leakage through which is minimized by opposing hydraulic pressure due to an auxiliary impeller I formed on the main impeller 30. The valve member rim 62c may be reinforced by cords or fabric embedded therein. Specification 432,838 is referred to.
