Abstract

Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for; connected to source of high or low pressure.-In a labyrinth packing for a turbine or compressor, an outer spsce 4 is maintained at a pressure slightly below atmospheric and an iner space 3 is maintained at a pressure slightly above that in the space 4, by automatic regulating means. If a, stage of the turbine &c. is at a pressure below atmospheric the space 3 is connected directly to that stage, but, if the lowest pressure of the turbine is above atmospheric, leakage into the space 3 is returned to the low-pressure stage by a compressor 12 and passages 5, 7, 11, and a further space 2 is connected directly to the passage 11 by a passage 6. The pressure in the space 3 is controlled by a regulator 8 connected by a, passage 9 to the passage 5 and by a passage 10 to atmosphere. In place of the compressor 12 an ejector may be employed operated by fluid from the turbine. The space 4 is connected by a passage 13 to a suction apparatus discharging to the atmosphere or to a recovery plant, the pressure in the space 4 being controlled by a regulator 14 connected by a passage 15 to the passage 13 and by a passage 16 to atmosphere. Instead of suction applied to the passage 13 a centrifugal blower may be mounted on the shaft in the space 4, the discharge from the space 3 being effected by an ejector. In this case a regulator controlling the supply passage of the ejector maintains a constant difference between the pressures in the spaces 3 and 4. If the pressure in the stage 1 is below atmospheric the connection 6 is dispensed with, the space 2 being supplied with fluid at a higher pressure than that in the stage 1.
