644,592. Centrifugal compressors; gas turbines; stuffing-box substitutes. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. July 10, 1947, No. 18233. Convention date, April 12, 1943. [Classes 110(i), 110(iii) and 122(v)] [Also in Group XXXIV] In an aircraft supercharger in which lubricant is circulated from a tank to a compressor shaft bearing and back to the tank, means are provided for connecting the tank and a point between the two ends of a packing for the shaft to a region where the pressure is higher than atmospheric. A pump 27 supplies oil to bearings 2, 3, 4 and gears 24, 25 by way of pipes 43, 46, 50, 51, the oil pressure being reduced to the required value by valves 44, 45. To prevent leakage of oil along the shaft, shaft packings 13, 14, 33, 22 are fed at points intermediate their ends with air under pressure from the discharge of the second stage 7 of the compressor by way of passages 60-66. The oil and air collect in sumps 49, 53 and are returned by scavenger pumps 28, 29 to an oil tank 40 by way of pipes 54, 55 and 57, 58. The combined capacity of pumps 28, 29 is greater than that of pump 27. The space in the tank above the oil is put under pressure by means of a connection 70 to the compressor discharge. This connection may be omitted, the pressure then being built up by the scavenger pumps. The pressure in the tank may be maintained at a desired value by a pressure relief valve 71 or by a small orifice. The pumps 27, 28, 29 are directly driven from gear 25, The supercharger is driven by an exhaustgas turbine 15.
