Abstract
315,789. Akt.-Ges. Brown, Boveri, et Cie. July 18, 1928, [Convention date]. Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for; draining; cooling.-In a refrigerating plant in which the evaporator is below atmospheric pressure, and the refrigerating medium is employed for packing the compressor shaft, leakage vapour is condensed by an injection of refrigerating medium, or by a jacket through which refrigerating medium, or evaporator solution is circulated. The refrigerating medium is supplied from the condenser 5 by a pipe 6 to a lantern ring 19 in the stuffing-box, between packings 13, and passes to the evaporator 1 by a pipe 6<1>, controlled by a valve 7 and provided with a cooler 22. Leakage towards the compressor 3 passes to the evaporator by the suction pipe 2, while leakage outwards passes to a lantern ring 18 draining into a chamber 25, from which it passes to the evaporator through a pipe 15<1>, controlled by a float valve. Vapour in the lantern space 18 is condensed by an injection of refrigerating medium, drawn from the pipe 6 by a pipe 8, and passing through a cooler 9. Vapour leaking past the gland 16 is withdrawn by a pipe 17, while liquid drains to the chamber 25 by a passage 23. When a centrifugal seal, Fig. 2, is employed the cooling liquid is supplied by a passage 12, and condensation liquid ecapes to the evaporator by a passage controlled by a float valve 15.
