Abstract

587,372. Centrifugal seals. ABBEY, A. (Jonkopings Mekaniska Werstads Aktiebolag.). Nov. 1, 1944, No. 21398. [Class 122 (v)] In a centrifugal pump with a vertical axis, a liquid seal is arranged above and on the same side of a runner 3 as an inlet conduit 5 to a pump chamber 6; the pump shaft 1 carries, in addition to the runner 3, a sealing wheel 12 situated in an annular horizontal pocket in a separate chamber 19 and provided with blades 10 and 17 submerged in the sealing liquid, at least one branch of the seal being subjected to the centrifugal force created by the blades 16 and 17 for compensating over-pressure or vacuum on the suction side of the pump. The sealing wheel 12 consists of a disc 14 projecting from a nave 13 and a cylindrical flange 15. In modifications, there may be two sealing wheels mounted axially on the pump shaft, each in its own chamber, or the sealing wheel may be cam-shaped. The liquid in the seal may be mercury.
