[Also in Division F2] A centrifugal pump comprises an impeller having an annular skirt 40 in sealing relation at 41 with a portion of a cover plate 11 (or with a separate ring). Ribs 44, of rectangular crosssection, on the back of the impeller disc 30 act as auxiliary pumping vanes to act on liquid passing around scalloped portion 35 of the periphery of the impeller disc, thereby assisting the main pumping vanes 33. The ribs 44 are hollow to provide passages 45 which exert a further pumping effect, whereby liquid reaching the annular space 42 enclosed by the skirt 40 is removed. The resultant reduction in pressure in the space 42 reduces the pressure to which the shaft seal 20 is subjected. To enhance this effect, the main vanes 33 may be of reduced radial dimensions so that the peripheral speed of the ribs 44 is greater than that of the main vanes.
