Abstract

1350752 Rotary shaft seals HENRY SYKES Ltd 19 April 1971 [3 April 1970] 16039/70 Heading F2B A rotary shaft, particularly a centrifugal pump shaft 10, is sealed where it extends through a casing wall 12 by means 11 comprising a non-rotatable packing unit 20-22 which is slidably sealed to the wall and comprises packing rings 20, 21 held in a carrier 22 and is axially urged by the fluid pressure differential across the wall to press the packing ring 20 into sealing contact with a radial bearing face 16 on the shaft. The metal carrier 22 is sealed by a rubber ring 23 to a tubular part 19 bolted to the wall. The bearing face 16 is on a shoulder 15 on a shaft 14 secured to the shaft. A tell-tale 27 indicates packing ring wear and prevents rotation of carrier 23. In operation, sub-atmospheric pressure created in space 28 by pump impeller 13 causes the packing unit to be moved axially so that packing ring 20 is urged against face 16. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the packing rings (20, 21) are separated by a rib (32) integral with the carrier (22) and when the pressure in space 28 is sub-atmospheric the ring (20) bears against the face (16) and when it is above atmospheric the ring (21) bears against a radial face (31) on a boss (29) attached to the shaft sleeve (14).
