Abstract

1,144,482. Mechanical seals. SPEEDWELL RESEARCH Ltd., and J. A. CANNINGS Ltd. 5 July, 1967 [6 April, 1966], No. 15422/66. Heading F2B. A seal 22 for the rotary shaft of a pump is made in one piece and is provided with a first sealing face 24 for engaging the face of a seal 26 and a second sealing face 29 for engaging the shaft, relative rotation of the seal on the shaft being prevented by a plate 30 provided with spring fingers. If desired, a separate spring may be used for urging the seal axially into engagement. The seal 22 may be made of glass or carbon filled P.T.F.E. and provided with a flat, spherical or conical rubbing face 24. The seal 26 may be made of stainless steel, tungsten carbide or ceramic material and mounted in the pump casing by a rubber ring 27. The plate 30 is fitted on to a squared portion of the shaft and its fingers engage in slots provided in a flange portion 35 of the seal. Instead of the second sealing face of the seal being a lip 29 it may be constituted by a diaphragm which extends radially inwardly from the flange 35 and is clamped against a shoulder 33 on the shaft by the plate 30.
