Abstract

1,096,816. Shaft seals. TRIST MOULDINGS & SEALS Ltd. May 9, 1966 [Feb. 15, 1965], No. 6398/65. Heading F2B. Sealing means for a rotary pump shaft 1 where it extends through the pump casing 2 comprises a main seal, e.g. a mechanical seal 4, and an auxiliary sealing ring comprising a wedge-section rubber ring 34 which is mounted in a dovetailed groove 35 in a ring 36 fixed to the casing on the pressure side of the main seal and is normally out of contact with the shaft but can be deformed into sealing contact with the shaft or a sleeve 33 thereon by admission of fluid under pressure to a chamber 37 at the bottom of the groove thereby enabling the main seal to be renewed or serviced when the pump is at rest without loss of liquid in the casing. The seal 4 comprises a non-rotatable sleeve 5 sealed to the casing by an 0-ring 7 and carrying a sealing ring 16 urged by springs 8 against a conical surface 17 on a collar 18 secured to the shaft 1.
