Abstract

848,621. Stuffing-box substitutes. MASCHINENFABRIK OERLIKON. Feb. 3, 1959 [Feb. 19, 1958], No. 3851/59. Class 122 (5). An oil seal for a shaft 1 extending from a housing 41 containing pressurized gas comprises a sealing ring 3<SP>1</SP> which is axially displaceable under the action of a spring 9 into sealing contact with a collar 2 on the shaft and is fitted with a packing ring 5 having an outside diameter substantially equal to the outer diameter of the sealing contact surface of the ring 3<SP>1</SP>, and at least one groove 7 provided in the sealing surface of the ring 3<SP>1</SP> and supplied through channels 6, with sealing oil, the pressure difference between the oil and gas being maintained approximately constant. The sealing oil is fed through a port 8 into a chamber between two rings 5, 5<SP>1</SP> and its pressure is regulated by a valve controlled by the pressure of the gas so that the oil pressure is always maintained at a constant amount above the gas pressure.
