Abstract
908,722. Rotary pumps. AMERICAN THERMOCATALYTIC CORPORATION. Oct. 13, 1959 [Oct. 13, 1958], No. 34664/59. Class 110 (2). A rotary pump of the sliding-rocking vane type, comprises a casing 1, Fig. 2, having at least a part-cylindrical bore 6 swept with slight clearance by equally spaced rigid vanes 40 secured to resilient projections on an elastomer hub 8, Fig. 1, fixedly mounted on a shaft 7 extending concentrically through the bore end rotatable in the casing cover 1<SP>1</SP>. The vanes slidingly between semicircular rods 17 mounted in slots 14 extending axially of a ring-shaped rotor 2 mounted for rotation about an axis offset from and parallel to that of the shaft 7 by means of a spigot 3 and an annular groove 5 in the cover 1<SP>1</SP>. Annular felt rings 2<SP>1</SP> impregnated with graphite or molybdenum disulphite containing grease or silicon lubricant are fitted between the ends of the rotor and the casing and cover and a similar strip 2<SP>11</SP> fitted in a groove at the near contact point of the bore 6 provides sealing of the rotor in the bore. Instead of the semicircular rods 17, rods 21, 22, Fig. 6, may be embedded in the rotor or alternatively the vanes may pass between a low-friction member 28, Fig. 7, and a resilient member 27 which allows wear to be taken up. There may be six vanes instead of three and the rotor may be tapered internally, externally or both, along its length to compensate for deformation occurring on rotation of the rotor at high speed.
