Abstract
871,822. Rotary engines. BORSIG A.G., and WANKEL, F. July 17, 1957 [July 17, 1956; Feb. 21, 1957], No. 22584/57. Class 110 (2). A rotary pump of the n, n +1 lobe type has an outer driving piston 1 mounted at one end of a drive shaft 2 and an inner piston 3 mounted at the inner end of a shaft 4, the shaft 2 being mounted in roller bearings in the pump housing 5 and the shaft 4 in roller bearings in the housing cover 6, the two shafts being out of alignment. The radius of the tips 52 of the teeth of the inner piston is between 1 and 3% of the inner piston's diameter and the inner piston contacts the outer piston only in the neighbourhood of the tips 52. A disc 7 mounted in the cover 6 has through slots 8, 9 whose alignment with the inlet and outlet ports respectively can be adjusted as required by rotating the disc. This disc may be hollow and filled with a cooling medium or a cooling medium may circulate through it. The inner or abutment piston has bevels 10 on the surface facing the disc 7. The control disc may be movable between two extreme positions determined by an abutment 19, Fig. 4, which is fixed to the housing cover. In addition to the inlet and outlet ports, the cover has an opening 20 communicating with the atmosphere or with the inlet to allow the compressor to idle. Both the inlet and outlet conduits may be provided with control valves. In an alternative arrangement the disc is fixed and its abutment is movable between two limiting positions. Inserts 53 in the teeth are of material having high elasticity or a low coefficient of friction such as hard carbon, sintered metals or synthetic rubbers.
