Abstract

649,871. Gaseous seals. PARSONS & CO., Ltd., C. A., and MEDCALFE, F. Sept. 9, 1948, No. 23701. [Classes 122(iii) and 122(v)] In an axial flow compressor the inlet end bearing 4 is provided, between it and the region of sub-atmospheric pressure 5, with labyrinth type oil seals 6 to which pressure air is continuously supplied and from which escaping air may enter a pocket 7, and the opposed faces of the bearing casing 2, which is split in a plane containing the bearing axis, have passages 9 therein substantially enclosing the bearing 4 and supplied continuously with pressure air.
