Abstract

790,817. Stuffing-boxes. SULZER FRERES, SOC. ANON. April 12, 1956 [April 22, 1955], No. 11217/56. Class 122 (5). A packing arrangement for the impeller shaft 1 of a centrifugal pump comprises inner and outer packing, 4-6 and 10-12 respectively, separated by an annular member 8 forming a gland for the inner packing and a stuffing-box for the outer packing and a passage 18 connecting the space between the inner and outer packing with the atmosphere through an adjustable throttle valve 19. The outer packing is compressed by a gland 14. A hole 16 in the member 8 is aligned with the inner end of the passage 18. The valve 19 is adjusted, either manually or automatically by a device controlled by the pressure in the pump housing 2, so that the pressure in the passage 18 is approximately half that in the housing.
