986,992. Seals; stuffing-boxes. CHEMICAL CONSTRUCTION CORPORATION. June 10, 1963 [June 28, 1962], No. 22974/63. Heading F2B. A packing unit disposed between a cylindrical shaft 1 and a housing 2 comprises at least two guide rings 5, 8, Fig. 1, each having at least one extension and each extension being directed towards an extension on an adjacent ring and having a central slot and inner and outer peripheral surfaces converging towards the radial surface portion adjacent the slot, a spline ring 13 extending between two of the guide rings and mounted in the central slots thereof, and inner and outer packing rings 7 disposed between the spline ring 13 and respectively the shaft 1 and the housing 2. The rings 5, 8, 13 may be of steel or aluminium and the packing rings 7 may be of neoprene or P.T.F.E. and may have a triangular or circular cross-section. The rings 5, 8 are mounted with a loose fit between the housing and shaft so that, during operation, they are displaced toward each other thereby compressing the rings 7 to provide sealing. Fig. 2 shows a stuffing-box comprising a number of guide rings similar to those of Fig. 1 as well as a composite guide ring 6 having two extensions. All the guide rings except the end ones may have two extensions. Lubrication is provided by oil fed through a passage 10 in the housing and a bleed hole 11 in a ring 9.
