Abstract
872,364. Stuffing-box substitutes. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 18, 1960 [April 2, 1959], No. 11275/59. Class 122 (5). In a seal for a rotatable shaft extending through a wall 1 of a casing containing gas under pressure and comprising a radial face on the shaft co-operating with a radial face on a non- rotatable casing member, for example a bush 3, an annular channel 4 formed in at least one of the faces with radial slots 5 extending outwardly from the channel to the outer periphery of the face and means for supplying oil from an external source through the non-rotatable member to the channel 4 and into the slots 5, the surfaces of the lands 7, Fig. 3, between the slots are wholly or partially tapered, as at 8, when viewed in a radial direction. The bush 3 is slidably carried in a mounting 11 secured to the wall 1 and is urged against a flange 2 on the shaft by springs 12. Oil at a pressure exceeding that of the gas pressure is fed from a source 16 through passages 15 and 6 to the channel 4 and creates an oil sealing film between the radial seal faces. In a modification the annular channel and radial slots are formed in the shaft flange 2 which is of hard metal, for example steel, whilst the bush is faced with soft metal, for example whitemetal.
