968,506. Stuffing-box substitutes. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 19, 1961 [Nov. 1, 1960], No. 37501/60. Heading F2B. In a seal for a rotatable shaft 3 extending through the wall 13 of a casing containing gas under pressure and comprising a radial face 9 on the shaft co-operating with a radial face 8 on the outer end of a non-rotatable bush 2 mounted in the wall 13 and having passages 6<SP>1</SP> therein through which oil is fed to a space between the faces 8, 9 at a pressure exceeding that of the gas, the bush 2 is provided in its outer periphery with an annular cavity 5<SP>1</SP> connected through the casing to the source 14 of pressure oil and through the bush to the passages 6<SP>1</SP>, and with one or more circumferential grooves located between the cavity 5<SP>1</SP> and the inner end of the bush and fitted with piston rings 12 of rigid material which sealingly engage the casing wall or, as shown, a mounting member 1 secured to the wall 13. The bush 2 is slidable in the member 1 and is urged against a flange 4 on the shaft by springs and the gas pressure acting on the inner end of the bush. Oil is fed from the source 14 through an annular cavity 5 and radial bores 6 in the member 1 and through the cavity 5<SP>1</SP> and the passages 6<SP>1</SP> to an annular channel 7 in the outer end of the bush. The faces 8, 9 may be radially slotted. Piston rings 11 prevent escape of oil to the outside. Specifications 872,364 and 873,160 are referred to.
