883,188. Stuffing-box substitutes. ZAVODY, V. I. LENINA PLZEN, NARODNI PODNIK. Feb. 6, 1959, No. 4262/59. Class 122 (5). In a means for sealing a shaft of a rotary machine two axially-spaced sealing rings 3 surround the shaft 6 which has helical grooves 8, 9 therein conveying lubricant in an opposite direction to that of the escaping direction of the lubricant. The lubricant, which is pressurized, is supplied to the interior of a bearing body 1 and then passes through holes 3a of rings 3, into an annular space 2 between said rings 3, the space 2 being opposite a circular groove 10 situated between the helical grooves 8, 9 in the shaft 6. Oil tending to escape between the rings 3 and the shaft 6 is mainly recovered by the helical grooves 8, 9 which are left and right-handed. In a modification, the space 2 is flared at 11 to allow for mal-alignment with the groove 10. A single groove 8 may be used and the groove 8, 9 may each be single or multiple start.
