Abstract

644,017. Stuffing-boxes. WALKER & CO., Ltd., J. May 7, 1947, No. 12362. [Class 122(v)] In a hydraulic packing in which a fluid tight joint is obtained by end sealing, wherein sealing members 13 are assembled in a housing 4 mounted around and rotatable with a shaft 1 to be sealed and the surfaces of the members 13 are exposed to be engaged by a sealing surface of a stuffing-box cover 3, the latter surface is movable axially relative to the packing to effect adjustment of the sealing pressure. The members 13 are mounted in an annular space 7 formed between inner and outer sleeves 5, 6 comprising the housing 4 which is locked to the shaft 1 by screws 8 in a part of the sleeve 5 which extends beyond the bore 2. The cover 3 is provided with a threaded bore and a ring 18 engaging this bore has a surface to contact the members 13 exposed from an open end of the housing 4. The sealing pressure is controlled by manual adjustment of the ring 18, by springs 23 and by fluid pressure assisting the springs 23. Hard sealing members may be used when the outer sleeve 6 is grooved to receive a projection on the members to prevent rotation. Specification 618,970 is referred to.
