Abstract

634,989. Stuffing-box substitutes. MURRAY, W. Sept. 12, 1946, No. 27472. [Class 122(v)] A fluid tight seal comprises a stationary ring pressed against a collar or disc mounted on a shaft by means of non-conducting resilient material, the ring and collar being electrically connected independently of the relatively rotating surface between them. As shown, one end of a bellows 2 is secured to a compressor casing by a cup 3 and a clamping ring 4 while the other end has a ring 6 recessed to make a fluid tight connection with a phosphor bronze ring 7 spring pressed against a disc 8 held on the shaft by non-conducting material 9. The disc 8 of metal different from ring 7 is electrically connected to the shaft by a split ring 10a or other spring contact held by a ring 12, the shaft and the compressor casing being earthed.
